When I first read ‘Spud’ by John van de Ruit I think I couldn’t put it down and would often just break out in laughter for it truellly was a very funny book. The 2nd one that followed this, ‘Spud – the madness continues’ wasn’t quite equally as funny but still definitely worth a read.

Spud - Learning to fly

Spud - Learning to fly

Therefore I hope that John van de Ruit has picked it up a bit and written another South African classic. For me coming from an all boys school and being a boarder too I can definitely relate to the story.

So while the going is good you can pre-order it for only R96, click here.

Here is the description from the back of the book:

As Spud Milton continues his diabolical stagger through adolescence, he learns one of life’s most important lessons: when dealing with women and cretins, nothing is ever quite as it seems. ‘I’m practically a man in most areas,’ writes Spud confidently on his sixteenth birthday. The year is 1992 and, as always in South Africa, radical change is in the air. The country may be on the bumpy road to an uncomfortable redemption, but Spud Milton is hoping for a smooth ride as he returns to boarding school as a senior. Instead, he discovers that his vindictive arch enemy is back to taunt him and that a garrulous Malawian has taken residence in his dormitory, along with the regular inmates and misfits he calls friends. Spud’s world has never seemed less certain; he attempts to master Shakespeare, wrestles constantly with God and the power of negative thinking, and develops an aversion to fried fish after a shocking discovery about his grandmother, Wombat. Spud – Learning to fly transports the reader on an authentic tragicomic journey, deep into the sublime and ridiculous world of being a teenager.

After much speculation this has finally been released and at the same time received some criticism for been a racist game… we’ll wait to hear if there are any complaints about it. The game is set in an African village which is where the complaint comes from.

Here is the trailer for the game:

The description from the game itself:

The biohazard threat has not ended: Just when it seemed that the menace ofResident Evil had been destroyed, along comes a new terror to sendshivers down player’s spines. Chris Redfield, returning Resident Evilhero, has followed the path of the evil literally around the globe. After joining a new organization, Chris heads to Africa where thelatest bioterrorism threat is literally transforming the people andanimals of the city into mindless, maddened creatures. Chris must takeon the challenge of discovering the truth behind this evil plot. InResident Evil 5, Capcom will teach players to fear the daylight as muchas they have feared shadow in previous games.

Co-producer and series veterans Jun Takeuchi (Lost Planet) andMasachicka Kawata (Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition, Resident Evil: UmbrellaChronicles) unleashes an unprecedented level of fear for the nextgeneration in Resident Evil 5, the sequel to one of the highest-ratedvideogames in history, according to Metacritic.com andGamerankings.com. Promising to revolutionize the series by deliveringan unbelievable level of detail, realism and control, Resident Evil 5is certain to bring new fans to the series. New technology developedspecifically for the game, as well as incredible changes to both thegameplay and world of Resident Evil will make this a must-have game forgamers across the globe.

Resident Evil 5 for Xbox 360

So amid bad news recently released that the price of the Xbox 360 console is to increase drastically we need to make haste while the sun is still shining and get it for a good price of R2699 for the 60gb console (best price we have at the moment)

While the PS3 now has a 160gb version stores are trying to get rid of their 80gb console and are generally selling it for a very good price and with 2 games, click here to see comparison. The 160GB version is going for R5399.95.

But the best price isn’t always available online, CNA recently released a Christmas brochure with a Sony PS3 80gb console with the new Resistance 2 game and Spiderman 3 on Blu-Ray for only R4999.95, that is pretty dam good.

So if you want a PS3 then I urge you to get that offer unless you really want 160gb on your console.

Last minute Christmas Shopping

Last minute Christmas Shopping

So, its only 24 days to go now and things are starting to slow down as everyone starts thinking about that well deserved holiday. I certainly am looking forward to a couple of sunny days in the Eastern Cape and some time off.

The one element that always scares me is the shopping, the madness of the shopping centers and the massive crowds of crazed shoppers. For myself I normally only make it to the shops on the 24th December, I’m not sure why… I always tell myself that I should do it now as lists are starting to go around and its not too busy yet, BUT I don’t.

So, for this coming Christmas I am going to try do it in the next week and urge you to do the same.

And if you don’t feel like going to the shops why don’t you just browse around online, there are plenty of options to choose from and delivery will most certainly be before Christmas. Some shops are even offering free wrapping etc (sure beats waiting in the queue to have your gifts wrapped once bought!)

If you aren’t sure what to get or what your family/friends want or you need to get your lists out, why don’t you use the application we built for Facebook. This app will allow you to place all your gifts that YOU want and allow you to list them, your friends will then be able to login via Facebook and view what gifts you added to the list. They can then ‘book’ an item which will indicate to all the other friends that you are buying this gift and that they must get something else. Its something that I developed just out of nessisity as I needed it. I hope you find it useful, if you aren’t sure what to add just browse MyKindaPrices.com and click on the ‘Add to FB Wishlist’ button.

What is going to one of the Christmas stocking favourites for all the PS3 fans out there is the latest release of Resistance 2.

Resistance 2 PS3

Resistance 2 PS3

I must say I was rather lucky in that I got to play Resistance: Fall of Mankind on a nice big 42inch plasma TV with a sound system that cost around £3000 when I was in London for a bit and wow I really enjoyed it. I still think Gears of War and Halo are better but for the PS3 its not too bad.

The plot follows on from the 1st game with your main hero, Sgt. Nathan Hale battling the Chrimera now on USA soil instead of British soil. The one break through in the game is the new multi-player levels and the co-operative mode, take a look at the trailer below:

The game is a bit pricey but take a look here to get the latest comparisons on the different retailer prices.

Over 2000 people waited in the cold outside a store in Oxford Street, London, last night to be one of the first to purchase the new expansion release to the World Or Warcraft series – Wrath of the Lich King Expansion Pack.

You can view the trailer here:

One chap had arrived at 6am yesterday morning and was first inline and wanted to be the first to buy the game but at midnight when they were allowed to come in to make the purchase he collapsed from exhaustion… The chap behind him was pretty happy to now be the first chap and even cracked an interview on BBC.

What does the new expansion pack offer?

  • New continent of Northrend
  • Level cap increased to 80
  • New high-level Death Knight character class
  • Introduction of “Inscription” profession
  • New enemy: The undead armies of the Lich King
  • Introduction of siege weapons
  • New player-vs-player battlefields

Some more news, Blizzard is set to start updating the graphics engine for WoW to make it more realistic and less cartoon like.

For the all the prices from the SA retailers selling this new expansion click here. In the Uk this is retailing for around £24.99. In order to use this expansion you need to have the orginal game and the Burning Crusade expansion pack plus a monthly subscription of £8.99.

Users will also need to be a minimum of level 55 which will rule out novice and low level players.

So the console war continues and at the moment the cheapest console is definitely the Xbox 360 Console. Recently released has been the new 60GB Pro Console and it is now only going for R2,500.00 which is pretty

Xbox 360 Pro Console 60GB for R2,500.00

Xbox 360 Pro Console 60GB for R2,500.00

cheap (in Jan this year i sold my 360 for R2.5k and that was only a 20GB console). So while the Xbox 360 has been decreasing in price the Nintendo Wii has actually been increasing in price to over R3k now…

why the increase? Nintendo says its due to the large demand for the console and the limited suppy. I think they are just cashing in on the huge success of the Nintendo Wii.

As for the PS3 it’s price has also come down but still not nearly the same as the Xbox 360, it is how ever offering 80GB’s of hard drive space, a blu-ray player and a couple of free games but for nearly another R2k I’ll definitely stick with the Xbox 360 for now.

So, one of the main comparisons not yet done properly really in SA is insurance comparison – and in a nutshell the reason is that what ever details you complete on an online form and submit to a comparison site the results you get will never be the exact amount you’ll pay.

My Mom bought a car recently and needed insurance and used Hippo, she ended up paying R100 more per month against the amount initially quoted on the site…. She tried complaining against this but was told its due to aditional factors they had to factor in.

So is this something that can actually be compared?

In the UK there is a lot of talk about the financial comparison websites and there inability to provide the correct quotes for users and that they are sucking customers in and then completing the deal becuase lets face it – its a pain to get insurance and all the paper work required.

Will it be possible to compare insurances here in SA and provide an accurate quote online? From working with some of the companies they say that the customer would need to complete almost 40 questions to get an accurate result if all the details are correct and they don’t feel that the customer would stick around to complete 40 questions.

For me, if I can complete the questions online and avoid a sales agent then I’m happy.

The 8 insurance providers

The 8 insurance providers

So, we are starting to provide some insurance comparisons but not actually providing results online. Customers simply complete a few details and then send it off and receive promptly the best quotes from the following 8 providers:

I am going to test it out still and invite you to do the same and leave comments on what you like and don’t like and how we can improve this service.
